Controller

Location: Clearwater, FL

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

The Controller is an exempt position responsible for oversight and management of the various functions of a complex accounting department, management and direction of fiscal functions, and ensuring conformance and compliance with regulatory and funding agencies’ rules and requirements.

Supervisor Responsibilities:

  • Supervises grant and accounting functions and staff.
  • Coaches and supports the development and knowledge growth of direct reports.
  • Takes initiative to continue personal professional training, education, and development to support innovation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare accurate, timely monthly financial statements and analyze variance reports in consultation with the CFO for presenting to the Board Finance Committee.
  • Oversee the annual budgeting process.
  • Oversee the annual auditing process and be the point of contact for auditing firm inquires and scheduling.
  • Support training and development of division staff in various financial technologies.
  • Identify and recommend strategies to streamline and improve fiscal operations and mitigate financial risks.
  • Work with staff to maintain updated various allocation tables (Expense, Payroll, etc.).
  • Conduct timely financial performance evaluations for programs and work performance of staff and ensure that the process of evaluation is performed in accordance with established procedure.
  • Responsible for review and submission of indirect cost proposals to the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Represent the organization at meetings centering on fiscal issues, as requested.
  • Oversee and manage critical projects to improve the organization's overall efficiency.
  • Update and maintain Finance policies and procedures.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

The Controller must have a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field with eight (8) years of professional accounting experience, four (4) years of experience in nonprofit accounting, and in addition to, five (5) years' experience in demonstrating leadership ability, team management, and people skills.

  • Experience working with a complex nonprofit with multiple programs, preferred.
  • Experience supporting the annual audit process, including preparing audit schedules and required reports.
  • Ability to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers.
  • Experience tracking and reporting federal expenditures.
  • Track record of success in a senior finance role demonstrating effective nonprofit financial management, including grant accounting and compliance.
  • Ability to manage, direct and comply with fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of human services systems as they relate to fiscal responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of GAAP Accounting rules.
  • Mastery of spreadsheets and pivot tables.
  • Knowledge of Financial Edge & Advanced Budget Management software, preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suites
  • Ability to deal professionally, courteously, and effectively with people.
  • Excellent leadership and team management abilities.
